Layering Memory

Final Year Minor Project

Layering Memory

Brief:

To re imagine the 14th century gatehouse of Roche abbey as a centre to preserve the craft of stone masonry in south Yorkshire.
The abbey was constructed in 1147 and was home to the Cistercian Monks and thrived until the dissolution of the monasteries by King Henry 8th in the 15th century.
Since then, the abbey has fallen into ruins. Renowned landscaper Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown designed the area in the 1770s, where it remained untouched until a large scale clearance in the 19th century.
